Azure engraily, on a chief dancette Argent between a pair of USCG Radioman rating insignia Azure (Dark Blue) a hurt charged with a mullet of the second; overall a Grumman J2F-4 plane Proper palewise, nose to chief, charged with the representation of the Distinguished Flying Cross ribbon on the top wing and the USCG Service markings on the bottom wing Proper.

Crest

From a wreath Argent and Azure, a laurel wreath,superimposed with a representation of the Distinguished Flying Cross Proper.

Motto

A tri-parted scroll Tenn lined Argent inscribedHONOR COMMITMENT SACRIFICE of the last.

On November 28th, 1942, Radioman FirstClass Benjamin A. Bottoms accompanied Lt. John A. Pritchard on a rescue missionto recover the crew of a U.S. Army B-17 that crashed onto an ice cap near thewest coast of Greenland. The dancetty/jagged White chief (upper background)alludes to the ice cap and the US Army Air Corps insignia portrays the B-17aircraft.  Conveyed by the lightning boltRadioman insignia, Bottoms provided accurate bearings enabling the pilot tolocate the downed bomber.  Prior to thisrescue mission, no one had successfully landed a plane on the ice cap.  Yet, Bottoms and Pritchard were able to land,rescue two of the B-17 crew, take off and make it safely back to the USCGCNORTHLAND (WPG-49).  The Grumman J2F-4used by Bottoms and Pritchard was crucial in the rescue efforts due to itsamphibious capabilities, allowing the two to reach the stranded crew of the B-17and return to the NORTHLAND.  The J2F-4bears the Coast Guard paint scheme and is adorned with the Distinguished FlyingCross ribbon in honor of Bottoms valiant rescue efforts.

Crest

The Distinguished Flying Cross wasawarded posthumously to Benjamin Bottoms for his daring rescue of the remainingcrew of the crashed Army B-17 aircraft. The laurel wreath encircling the DistinguishedFlying Cross pendant signifies honor, respect and remembrance.

Motto

The motto, HONOR COMMITMENT SACRIFICE, encapsulates Bottoms efforts throughcourageous dedication to the mission in the face of extreme adversity andprovides noble guidance for the command crew going forward.  The vibrant orange of the scroll with whiteaccents is reminiscent of a life preserver ring and displays the colors associatedwith the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard officer sword and enlisted cutlass pay tribute to the command and crew, representing authority, professionalism, cooperation andunity in the accomplishment of their mission.
